The Green Register - EB - Code For Sustainable Homes Sustainability Statements

Many funding proposals, planning applications and feasibility studies now require supporting Sustainability Statements. Greenlight Construction is experienced and able to produce statements that will support your bid in the best way possible.

Some supporting statements need to follow set guidelines and/or checklists. Others need to be tailor-made to suit the specific application and could be brief appraisals or full-blown in depth reports. Whatever the requirement, Greenlight Construction will be able to assist you.

Whilst Greenlight Construction is able to offer sustainability statements as a 'stand alone' consultancy service it is often far more beneficial for a more rounded package to be considered that includes design and specification advice at as early a stage as possible. This will enable all feasible options to be explored so that the required standards are achieved for the best value possible.

From single dwellings to large mixed use schemes, Greenlight Construction can deliver what you need to support your scheme.

Example 1 - Mixed-Use Urban Scheme

Greenlight Construction undertook a Sustainability Appraisal and Statement of this mixed use scheme which included 35 apartments, 5 townhouse and 910m2 of commercial space. The Statement was a required by the Local Authority to accompany the Planning Application documentation.

The Sustainability Statement explored all areas of sustainable development in relation to the scheme including:

  • -Energy efficiency - a commitment was made to ensure that all the residential properties would be at least 25% better than current Building Regulations for CO2 emissions
  • -Renewable energy - installation of solar panels to all the apartments
  • -Transport issues - the development was on a road with a very frequent and reliable bus service
  • -Waste management - a commitment was made that the scheme would be developed by a Considerate Constructor and that a meaningful Site Waste Management Plan would be drawn up and implemented

Example 2 - A Ruraal Eco-Home

Greenlight Construction was commissioned as part of the design team to ensure that the very best principles of sustainability are considered as part of the design process and to report on their level of integration by way of a Sustainability Statement in support of a planning application for this 500m2 + single rural dwelling in Sussex. The Sustainability Statement evaluated the scheme for measures such as:

  • -energy conservation by consideration of good passive solar design, inverted living, a semi sunken structure packed with insulation, buffer zones & solar shading with designed overhangs
  • -energy creation using a very efficient pond source heat pump system
  • -green roofing to attenuate surface water and increase biodiversity
  • -on site wastewater treatment to eliminate the need for a pumping main

The concluding sentence of the supporting Sustainability Statement was as follows:

'This is a dwelling that will, by design, have a miniscule carbon footprint relative to its size and as such will act as a shining beacon of just what can be done as we all seek to find ways of mitigating climate change'.
